The metal framework that holds ceiling tiles in a drop ceiling.
A ceiling grid is the metal framework of main runners, cross tees, and wall angles that supports acoustical ceiling tiles or other panels in a suspended ceiling system. The grid is attached to the structure above with hanger wires and establishes the finished ceiling height. Standard module sizes are 2×2 and 2×4 feet.
Ceiling grid quantities and layout drive both the grid material takeoff and the coordination of everything that lands in the ceiling plane, so estimators price it alongside light fixtures, diffusers, and sprinkler heads rather than in isolation. Grid type, finish, and seismic bracing requirements meaningfully change cost, and missing the bracing in seismic zones can leave a bid short on labor and accessories.
An estimator takes off a 2x2 ceiling grid for an office floor, then adds seismic compression posts and perimeter clips required by code in that jurisdiction, plus tile cuts around the lighting and HVAC layout.
