Bracing

In Plain English

Diagonal supports that keep a building frame from swaying sideways in wind or earthquakes.

Definition

Diagonal structural members or systems installed to resist lateral forces such as wind and seismic loads. Bracing provides stability to frames that would otherwise rack or sway under horizontal loading. Common types include cross-bracing, knee bracing, and eccentric bracing.

Why It Matters in Bidding

Bracing scope often falls in a gray zone between the structural steel sub, the framer, and the deck installer, so estimators must read the structural drawings carefully to confirm who carries the diagonal members, gussets, and connection hardware. Missed or double-counted bracing is a common source of bid scope gaps that surface as change orders after award.

Example

While doing the steel takeoff, the estimator flags that the X-bracing rods and turnbuckles at the elevator shaft are shown on S-sheets but not listed in the steel sub's quote, so he issues an RFI before finalizing the bid.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the type and material. Permanent steel bracing usually falls to the structural steel subcontractor, while temporary erection bracing is typically the erector's means and methods. Wood and metal-stud lateral bracing goes to the framer. The estimator should confirm responsibility in the scope sheets to avoid gaps or overlaps.
Pull diagonal member lengths and connection details from the structural sheets, then add gusset plates, bolts, anchors, and welding labor. Account for cut waste and field fit-up. For repetitive bays, develop a per-bay assembly and multiply by frame count rather than measuring each member individually.
Permanent bracing is part of the finished structure and shown on the design drawings, so it is priced as installed material and labor. Temporary bracing supports the work during erection and is a means-and-methods cost the contractor carries in general conditions or erection labor, not a deliverable on the plans.
